A Birthday Shout-out March 3rd*

It is Ben Nelson’s birthday today. On the day he was born, the weather was clear and windy. The temperature dropped all day from a high of around 36 to a low of 11, with some pretty good gusty winds around the 25-30 mph range.

His proud parents are Lynne (Daley) Nelson and Russell Nelson. Ben’s grandmother was the late Joan (Riley) Daley (1929-2019) and his great grandfather was the late Patrick J. Riley (1900-1985).

I didn’t get to post last June about the Ben’s great senior year on the Middletown High School baseball team. Ben was a major contributor as his team won the school’s first state championship. Ben led the team in runs scored, stolen bases and averaged over .300 + for the season.

Here is a photo that was published last June in the Newport Daily News.

Happy Birthday, Ben, and belated congratulations on Middletown’s 1st State Championship.

Presently, Staci lives in the ”West Bay” area with husband Michael and their two boys, Zachary and Jacob.

Staci’s high school photo…no question she’s a Fleury!

Happy Birthday, Staci!

Birthday Shout-out February 15th *

Tammie (Daley) McNaught, has a Birthday today. As I noted in her past posts, Tam’s first day was also a cold one like today, when the temperature hovered around the 10º that February day. Tammie’s mother and father, the late Joan (Riley) Daley (1929-2019) and the late Frederick (“Nick”) Daley (1927-1991), weren’t bothered by the deep freeze because they had their first daughter.

Since last year’s birthday post Tammie and husband, Peter McNaught are now grandparents. Tammie and Peter’s oldest son, Jonathan and his wife Meara (Santoro), now have a beautiful baby girl named Flora Joan. Now that’s a way to get through the pandemic!

Happy Birthday, Tammie! Hope you get to have an enjoyable day.

Origins of Valentine’s Day?

I thought this would be an appropriate and a fun read for today.

The following post is taken whole, or in part, from a posting by Mike Collins’, Green Room,
Your Irish Heritage, Old Abbey, Waterfall, County Cork, Ireland.

Saint Valentine of Dublin.

“If you ever have a chance to visit Whitefriar Street in Dublin City, do take a few moments to head into The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The chances are that you will not be alone. It is likely that you’ll see a few couples through the day – stopping at a shrine on the right side of the church. This is where you will find the remains, and relics, of Saint Valentine – many couples come here through the year to ask for his guidance in their lives together.”

The Light Comes with a February Flower.

“Very little is known about Saint Valentine. In fact, it is unsure as to whether he was a single person or a combination of a few early Saints. However, we are not going to let the facts get in the way of a good story! One of my favourite legends of Saint Valentine goes something as follows.

Valentine was a Christian citizen of early Rome who possessed special healing abilities. One day, a jailer arrived to see him, accompanied by his young daughter who had been blind from birth. He had heard of Valentine’s healing powers, and was wondering if he could cure even this permanent situation. Well, Valentine gave the man ointment for her eyes and asked for her to return each week.

Over time, he also became a teacher to the little girl – he described the world around them, and the world of books – and over time she learned to see the world through his eyes. Even though the little girl’s sight was never restored during this time, the girl and her father returned each week. One week, Valentine was no longer there – he had been arrested for his religious beliefs, and his medicines were destroyed by the authorities. He had also been sentenced to death. From his prison cell, Valentine wrote one last note to his little friend – and handed it to the jailer for his daughter. Valentine was executed the following morning.

The jailer went home and gave this note to his little girl. She opened it and felt a flower inside – and, as the little girl pointed her eyes down to the flower in her hand, she saw the brilliant colours of a yellow Crocus flower for the first time in her life! Her eyesight had been restored. She asked her father to read the message. All it said was: “From your Valentine.” And so we have the tradition of giving tokens of friendship and love at this time of the year. Now, isn’t that a story worth believing? Perhaps all those couples in Whitefriars church in Dublin are looking for a similar light in their life together.”

Happy Valentine’s Day, Everyone!

A Birthday Remembrance February 12th

William Francis (1931-1966) and James Augustus Riley (1931-2010), identical twins, were born on this day to Margaret C. McSally Riley (1900-1938) and Patrick J Riley (1900-1985).

Recently, I rediscovered a small photo that shows the twins being sworn-in to the US Navy. I suspect it was taken by Naval personnel. Although it is not dated, my guess is that it was taken in the spring of 1949.

Sorry for the quality, did my best to restore it.

It is Elizabeth Daley Mahonys birthday today. Beth was born in Providence on this date to the late Joan Louise (Riley) Daley (1929-2019) and the late Frederick A. Daley (1927-1991). Beth’s maternal late grandparents were Patrick Joseph Riley (1900-1985), Margaret Cecelia McSally(1900-1938) and Margaret Frances Bartley (1911-1878), while her late paternal grandparents were John Thomas Daley (1892- ?) and Delia Calahan (1893- ?). Delia (Bridget) was born in Ireland.

After attending schools in Pawtucket – St Teresa’s and Saint Raphael Academy – Beth was off to the University of Rhode Island, where she not only got herself a degree, but charmed a guy named Tom Mahony. A year or two after URI, the couple married and settled in California where she and Tom have built a new life and a wonderful family.

Marjorie Mulligan Pacelli also has a birthday today. Marjorie, born in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Her late parents are Kathleen Agnes Riley (1989-1988) and William Francis Mulligan (1886-1970).

Marjorie grew up in Foxborough, attending local schools, and graduating from Foxborough High, after having had a very successful academic career. She was the étoile of the French Club, and was a member of the Yearbook Club all through school.

Marjorie has two sisters, the late Connie Welch (1924-2020) and Janet Cushing, and a brother, the late William Russell Mulligan (1921-2005).

In July of 1948, Marjorie married Alfred J. Pacelli (1925-2017) at St. Mary’s Church in Foxboro, MA. They had four children: David, Richard, Christopher and Jennifer. Al passed away on Jan. 25, 2017 while living on the Cape.

Another Birthday Shout-out January 14th*

Paula Mulligan Kostycz, daughter of Margaret Ernestine Riley (1910-1989) and Walter Francis Xavier Mulligan (1906-1957), has a birthday today. Paula is living in southwest Florida, where today’s expected temperature will be about 73 degrees and the skies partly sunny. I’d say that’s just about perfect birthday weather.

Paula is the third born of the four Mulligan siblings. Her sisters are Judy (1938-1962), and Martha, and she has one brother, Kevin. Then, there was that man from Chicago, John Kostycz, who sadly passed away last July. Paula and John had been married for over 50 years.

I recently discovered a photo of Paula and John dancing away at Kathy and my wedding, which is posted below

Pawtucket Country Club, August 1987

Happy Birthday, Paula!

A Birthday Shout-out January 10th

Today is Nick Daley’s birthday.

Son of John and Debbie Daley and grandson of the late Joan Riley Daley (1929-2019) and Frederick A. Daley (1927-1991), Nick lives with his parents in Attleboro, Massachusetts. In keeping with a Daley family tradition, Nick plays baseball and is good at it. But, Nick has added a bit of a twist to his family’s baseball lore. Not only does Nick play, but he umpires, too. When Nick isn’t on the field as a player, he just might be found behind the plate calling the balls and strikes. ⚾️

Happy Birthday, Nick! See ya on the diamond when it warms up.
