Gertrude C. Riley was born in Pawtucket on this date in 1904 to the late Margaret E. Greenhalgh (1876-1962) and the late Patrick Leo Riley (1875-1955).

According to Patrick J. Riley, Gertie’s older brother, she was always a strong- willed personality with a quick mind and a determined path. Not only was “Gertie” the first of Margaret and Patrick Leo’s children to attend high school, but she was the first to graduate from college – the now, Rhode Island College.

After college, Gertie’s work life was devoted to Pawtucket’s school children. For 47 years she taught in the city’s elementary grades and rose to be the long time principal at East Avenue Elementary and was the first principal of the Frances Varieur School. Although “Miss Riley” never married, she had thousands of Pawtucket children whom she helped mold into adulthood. We all should be quite proud of our “Miss Riley”, for Gertie was something special.

Lynne Daley was born on this date in the city of Providence to the late Joan Louise (Riley) Daley (1929-2019) and the late Frederick “Nick” Daley (1927-1991).

Lynne grew up in Pawtucket and attended the local parochial elementary school and graduated from Tolman High School. Soon after graduating from Katherine Gibbs, Lynne began her working career at National Grid. It just so happened that Nation Grid acquired Blackstone Valley Gas and Electric which was the former place of employment for both her grandfathers, Patrick J. Riley and John T. Daley.

Later, Lynne moved to Middletown where her two sons, Jack and Ben, are continuing the family’s tradition of playing excellent baseball!

Here’s to Lynne and wishing her a wonderful birthday.

Jonathon McNaught was born in Providence on this date to Tammie Daley and Peter McNaught. His mother is the first daughter of the late Joan “Riley” Daley (1927-2019) which makes his maternal grandfather Patrick J. Riley (1900-1985).

Jonathan grew up in Lincoln, RI where he was active in both baseball and hockey. In fact, his participation in those sports led him to a distinction that few, if any, in the Riley related Family Tree can claim. While playing for the Lincoln Little League Baseball All-Star team, that team made it all the way to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA! While that would be the crowning achievement in most young athlete’s career, Jonathan went on to play defense for Lincoln High’s State Championship Hockey team.

After all that, the adult part of his life would seem to be a bit mundane until he met Meara Santoro. The couple was married on November 2, 2018 in Middletown, RI.

Here is a great picture of the happy couple:

Congratulations

Constance Mulligan was born on this date in 1924 to the late Kathleen Agnes Riley (1899-1988) and the late William Francis Mulligan (1888-1970). Online records indicate that Constance “Connie” was born in Providence.

Connie was the second born of the four “Massachusetts” Mulligan children. Her oldest sibling was the late William Russell (1921-2005, see previous post); followed by Majorie, who is presently living on the Cape and Janet Frances Cushing living out by San Francisco Bay.

Connie married Joseph D. Welch (1921-2003) of Quincy, Norfolk, MA and brought two daughters into the world, Brenda and Beverly. Beverly had a birthday earlier this week.

Everyone wishes Connie, the happiest 95th Birthday.

Karen Ann Matteson Fleury was born on this date in Providence, RI As a youngster growing up in Cranston, Rhode Island, Karen had a very good athletic career. She participated in basketball, softball and volleyball during her high school years.

It was in early fall of 1986 that she married Timothy Patrick Fleury, son of the late Barbara Hope Riley (1927-2015) and the late Richard B. Fleury, Sr (1928-1992).

Karen and Tim have two children, Sean and Erin.

Hope you’re having a very Happy Birthday.

Beverly Welch Pini, was born on this date to Constance Mulligan and the late Joseph (Joe) Welch (1921-2003). She was the second child and has a sister, Brenda.

Beverly’s grandmother was the late Kathleen Agnes Riley (1899-1988) and her late grandfather was William Francis Mulligan (1880-1970). It is a coincidence that there are two Mulligan families that branch off the Riley Family Tree, but they are only related through marriage, not blood.

Growing up and spending most of her life in neighboring Massachusetts, Beverly married a Bay State guy, Albert Ross Pini, Jr. and the couple have a son, Ross.

Happy Birthday to Beverly.

John Frances Riley, son of Patrick Riley (Ireland) and Rose Kieran (Ireland) was born on this date in 1885 in Pawtucket. He was the 7th of the 8 children born to Patrick and Rose.

According to his death certificate, his birth date was September 4, 1885, but two separate US Census forms listed his birth on the 15th of September. In additional support of the census forms, there is his WWII draft card, which gives his birth date as the 15th. Since he signed that draft card verifying the information as correct, I going with today as his birth date. Additional information from his draft card lets us know that he was 5′ 7 1/2, had hazel eyes, gray hair and weighted 125 lbs with a light complexion.

Michael never married. His work history indicates he was a laborer all his working life. My father, Patrick J. Riley (1900-1985), told me that when John was in his early 50’s he had injured his back while at work and became unemployed till his death. His passing occurred on December 18, 1951 at 181 South Bend Street in Pawtucket.

William Russell Mulligan was born in Pawtucket on this date in 1921 to the late Kathleen Agnes Riley (1899-1988) and the late William Frances Mulligan (1888-1970).

As best as I can remember he was always known by his middle name. A quiet, very intelligent and deeply caring man who always seemed to listen than expound. A bit of a rarity among our family tree male members, must be his Mulligan side was in dominate. My father, Patrick J. Riley (1900-1985) was Russell’s godfather.

The following has been gleaned from his obituary posted on the funeral home site:

Russell served in the U.S. Air Force in Europe during World War II. After the war he graduated from Northeastern University and later received a teaching certificate from Central Connecticut Teachers’ College, and taught in northwestern Connecticut for some years. In 1961, he earned a master’s degree in social work and worked as a clinical social worker at the Institute of Living in Hartford until 1964, when he returned to the Connecticut education system as a school social worker in the Newington schools until retiring in 1987.

Russell married Aileen Nettleton on April 18, 1964 in Hartford, CT

Upon retirement, he and Aileen moved to Stonington where he pursed his interests in oil painting, gardening, and travel.

Russell, was 83, when he passed on March 1, 2005, at following a long illness.

Russell had three sisters, Constance Welsh of Foxboro, MA., Marjorie Pacelli of Osterville, MA., and Janet Cushing of Tiberon, CA., and their families.

A memorial service was held in Foxboro, MA., with a private interment in the Calvary Church Memorial Garden in Stonington, CT

Blessed with two sons, Brian Lightfoot Brown and Kyle Clearwater Brown, Patricia also has two brothers, William and Paul.

Patricia has great hair. (L to R) her former style, her very recent cut coif styled by her son Kyle.
