A Birthday Shoutout – Oct 26th

Janet Frances (Mulligan) Cushing, of the Massachusetts Mulligans, is celebrating her birthday on the coast in Northern California, where she and her husband Larry live. Hopefully, the weather will be sunny and mild, and the smoke from the brush fires will have cleared.

Back in the middle of June we posted an idyllic picture of the entrance to Janet’s garden (seen here for reference).

We have our fingers crossed that the smoke and ash didn’t damage the vegetation and all Janet’s hard work.

Here is photo of the lovely couple:

Happy Birthday, Janet! May the smoke dissipate and your flowers pollinate.

A Birthday Today – Oct 15th

Beverly Welch Pini, daughter of the late Constance (Mulligan) Welsh (1924-2020) and the late Joseph (Joe) Welch (1921-2003), has herself a birthday today. No, don’t even ask me, let us just say she can legally have an adult beverage and can vote. Leave it at that.

By the way, Beverly’s grandmother was the late Kathleen Agnes Riley (1899-1988) and her late grandfather was William Francis Mulligan (1880-1970) of Massachusetts.

Beverly is married to Albert Ross Pini, Jr., and they have a son, A. Ross Pini, III. A well placed source has informed 19pondstreet that Beverly and her husband Ross have a new grandchild. Graham Benjamin recently entered the world – congratulations to the new mom and dad, A. Ross III and Meghan Brown.

Happy Birthday to Beverly.

Rita P. Riley – Birthday *

Rita (Coleman) Riley, wife of Francis C. Riley (1915-2004) and mother to Stephen F. Riley, was born in Pawtucket on this day in 1917. Her parents, Martin F. Colemen and Mary Anne Kenney, both emigrated from Ireland, making Rita a “1st Generation American.”

Recently, Rita’s Pawtucket High School graduation picture was published and it is included here.

Constance Marie Mulligan Welsh

Sad news to post today. Connie Mulligan Welsh, daughter of Kathleen (Riley) Mulligan (1899-1988) passed away this past Wednesday, the 22nd of July.

Connie might have been petite, but her personality and warmth were enormous. You always felt special in her presence.

For years, Connie and her late husband Joe (1921-2003) hosted an annual Mulligan – Riley family cookout at their home in Foxboro. Grandma, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins and 2nd cousins, in-laws, and maybe an outlaw or two, all gathered for a noon to dusk party. Joe would liven up the group with pronouncements punctuated with creative usage of some Anglo-Saxon phrases, until Connie ruled the day with a “we’ll have no more of that” stare.

All who knew Connie will miss her charming ways and lovely manner.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to her daughters, Brenda and Beverly.

Constance M. Welsh
October 18, 1924 – July 22, 2020

Constance Marie (Mulligan) Welsh of Foxborough, MA passed away on July 22, 2020 at home. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph D. Welsh, who predeceased her in 2003.

She graduated from Foxborough High School in 1942, received her Secretarial Certificate from Pawtucket Business School and was employed at the Foxboro Company. While raising her family, she assisted in the family business, Welsh’s Dairy. After her family was grown, she was employed at Foxboro State Hospital and Wrentham State School in the medical records department.

Of all the places she visited or things she had done in her 95 years, Connie’s greatest enjoyment was being with her family. She is survived by her daughters Brenda Fayed and her husband Toman of Glastonbury, CT, and Beverly Pini and her husband A. Ross Pini, Jr. of North Attleboro. Also, her grandsons: A. Ross Pini III and his wife Meghan of Roslindale, MA, Ryan Fayed and his wife Brianne of West Hartford, CT, and Timothy Fayed of Jamaica Plain, MA, and her great grandsons, Grant and Nolan Fayed.

Also survived by her sisters, Marjorie Pacelli of Franklin and Janet Cushing of Tiburon, CA. She was the sister of the late Wm. Russell Mulligan.

Brenda Jane Welsh was born on this date in Attleboro, Massachusetts to Constance (Mulligan) Welsh (b. 1924) and the late Joseph D. Welsh (1921-2003). Brenda’s maternal grandmother was the late Kathleen A. (Riley) Mulligan (1899-1988) and her great grandmother was the late Marguetta E. (Greenhalgh) Riley (1876-1962).

Brenda and her sister Beverly grew up in Foxboro, MA. The family lived on a very nice piece of property located on Mill Street. It was her parents who kept up the annual family cookout/reunion, which drew relatives from all the various branches of the family.

After Foxboro High School, Brenda attended Mercyhurst College. Soon after graduation, she began her career as an elementary school teacher.

On April 21, 1984, Brenda married A. Toman Fayed. They have two sons, Ryan and Timothy, and two grandsons Grant and Nolan. Besides raising their family and dedicating themselves to their professions, Brenda and Toman became quite accomplished tennis line judges, officiating at major tournaments throughout the U.S.

A Happy “Stay at Home” Birthday to Brenda!

Since Brenda seems to have perfected the art of avoiding photos of herself, particulary with the Rileys (well she always was one of the smart ones), here are a couple from way back in the archives.

Constance Mulligan was born on this date in 1924 to the late Kathleen Agnes Riley (1899-1988) and the late William Francis Mulligan (1888-1970). Online records indicate that Constance “Connie” was born in Providence.

Connie was the second born of the four “Massachusetts” Mulligan children. Her oldest sibling was the late William Russell (1921-2005, see previous post); followed by Majorie, who is presently living on the Cape and Janet Frances Cushing living out by San Francisco Bay.

Connie married Joseph D. Welch (1921-2003) of Quincy, Norfolk, MA and brought two daughters into the world, Brenda and Beverly. Beverly had a birthday earlier this week.

Beverly Welch Pini, was born on this date to Constance Mulligan and the late Joseph (Joe) Welch (1921-2003). She was the second child and has a sister, Brenda.

Beverly’s grandmother was the late Kathleen Agnes Riley (1899-1988) and her late grandfather was William Francis Mulligan (1880-1970). It is a coincidence that there are two Mulligan families that branch off the Riley Family Tree, but they are only related through marriage, not blood.

Growing up and spending most of her life in neighboring Massachusetts, Beverly married a Bay State guy, Albert Ross Pini, Jr. and the couple have a son, Ross.

Happy Birthday to Beverly.

Born on this date – Sept 7th

William Russell Mulligan was born in Pawtucket on this date in 1921 to the late Kathleen Agnes Riley (1899-1988) and the late William Frances Mulligan (1888-1970).

As best as I can remember he was always known by his middle name. A quiet, very intelligent and deeply caring man who always seemed to listen than expound. A bit of a rarity among our family tree male members, must be his Mulligan side was in dominate. My father, Patrick J. Riley (1900-1985) was Russell’s godfather.

The following has been gleaned from his obituary posted on the funeral home site:

Russell served in the U.S. Air Force in Europe during World War II. After the war he graduated from Northeastern University and later received a teaching certificate from Central Connecticut Teachers’ College, and taught in northwestern Connecticut for some years. In 1961, he earned a master’s degree in social work and worked as a clinical social worker at the Institute of Living in Hartford until 1964, when he returned to the Connecticut education system as a school social worker in the Newington schools until retiring in 1987.

Russell married Aileen Nettleton on April 18, 1964 in Hartford, CT

Upon retirement, he and Aileen moved to Stonington where he pursed his interests in oil painting, gardening, and travel.

Russell, was 83, when he passed on March 1, 2005, at following a long illness.

Russell had three sisters, Constance Welsh of Foxboro, MA., Marjorie Pacelli of Osterville, MA., and Janet Cushing of Tiberon, CA., and their families.

A memorial service was held in Foxboro, MA., with a private interment in the Calvary Church Memorial Garden in Stonington, CT
