Our Fleury Branch may have Champagne Roots

Just finished reading the book, The Seine, The River That Made Paris, by Elaine Sciolino.* In it, the author has a chapter which features a family named Fleury, their land, vineyard and their champagne production.

The Fleury vineyard is located in the Seine Valley near the village of Courteron, about a 3 hour drive southeast of Paris and right by the head waters of the Seine. The 37 acre vineyard has been in operation since 1894 with four generations of Fleury working the land.

What makes the Fleury champagne special is the method of farming utilized in the vineyard. According to author Sciolino, in 1989 vintner, Jean-Claude Fleury began to employ “biodynamic farming” which “centers on respect for the earth’s ecosystems” and improves photosynthesis.

Click here to connect to the Fleury Vineyard website. It maybe one of the few ways we can travel now-a-days.

Here is a photo of the Fleury storage facility.

Our Fleurys may have champagne taste, but do they have the budget to match?

By the way, if you are in any measure of a Francophile or have visited Paris, Elaine Sciolino’s book would be an enjoyable read.

Welcome to the World, Oliver

Erin (Fleury) Garceau and Michael Garceau proudly announce the arrival of their son Oliver Michael Garceau on Saturday, August 8th. Oliver weighed in at 7 lbs. and 9 oz. and is 21″ long. Mom is doing well.

Karen (Matteson) Fleury and Timothy Fleury are the proud maternal grandparents. The late great grandparents, Barbara (Riley) Fleury (1927-2015) and Richard “Dick” Fleury (1928-1992) would have been overjoyed.

Oliver is now the 7th member of the 6th generation, who can trace his connection to a distant Riley somewhere/sometime in County Cavan, Ireland.

Congratulations to Nancy Fleury Orlando!

Nancy Fleury Orlando, daughter of Barbara Riley Fleury (1927-2015) and Richard B. Fleury, Sr.(1928-1992), drove away from Raytheon today after a long and successful career.

We won’t say how many working years Nancy gave to Raytheon. Let’s just say that, in this day and age, her longevity and commitment is a rarity. Job well-done, Nance, and happy retirement! We are all safer and more secure because of your dedication.

So here’s to you, Ms. Orlando. Choose your own commute, your own agenda, and maybe sleep a littler bit later.

Born on this Date – July 31st

Richard B. Fleury, Jr., was born on this day in Providence to Barbara (Riley) Fleury (1927-2015) and Richard Bernard Fleury (1928-1992).

Rick, as he is better known, grew up in the Darlington section of Pawtucket, right off Daggett Avenue. It was a great location. It had access to a couple of vacant lots perfect for sandlot baseball, an elementary school playground down the street with a basketball court, and just enough access to some wooded areas for an adventurous boy on a bike. The second born of Barbara and Dick’s four children, Rick was preceded by Cindy, then followed by siblings Tim and Nancy. He grew up in a family with wonderful parents and great siblings.

Rick’s life was spiced with dashes of St Leo’s Elementary School, CYO basketball and baseball, St Raphael’s Academy, both softball and golf, and then topped off with a degree from Northeastern University. While still at NU, Rick began his working career at Raytheon, where his efforts resulted in having his name attached to several patents – there’s a whole secrecy thing surrounding them, so don’t ask.

After college, Rick continued his participation in high level amateur sports, always trying to improve his footwork and moves with some success. It wasn’t until the Spring of ’78 that Rick completed his best move, when he married Darleen Fisher. Two children (Staci and Tim), four grandchildren and a beautiful restored mustang later, life has been pretty good for another kid from Pawtucket.

You know this kid never got in trouble in elementary school.

Happy Birthday, Rick.

How ’bout taken that Mustang out for nice ride?

Born on this Date – July 17th

Emerson Arthur Fleury was born on this date in Providence to Karen Serpa Fleury and Timothy Fleury. On Emerson’s paternal side, his grandparents are Richard “Rick” and Darleen Fleury; great-grandparents the late Richard B. Fleury (1928-1992) and Barbara (Riley) Fleury (1927-2015) and his great great-grandfather, Patrick J. Riley (1900-1985).

Emerson can trace his Riley bloodline back 6 generations to 1862, which just happens to be the same year that his namesake, Ralph Waldo Emerson transcended into the afterlife.

Happy Birthday, Emerson! May your life be as sweet as your birthday cake and may your adventures be as rich as its frosting.

A Birthday Today! – June 29th*

Timothy M. Fleury, son of Richard (Rick) and Darleen Fleury, was born on this date in Providence, and grew up in Bristol, RI.

Tim’s had a pretty good couple of years lately. Married the lovely Karen Serpa, began married life in Cumberland and welcomed two sons into the world, Emerson and Eliot. But, that’s not all, today he got a new quarterback!

Born on this Date – June 10th

Jacob Richard Ferreira was born on this day in Providence to Staci Fleury and Michael Ferreira. Jacob’s grandparents (on the Riley side) are Darleen and Richard (Rick) Fleury.

As a six year old, Jacob is probably not that interested that his Birthday is being acknowledged on the blog. Today his attention is most likely focused elsewhere on things like cake, ice cream, a party, a present or two and having a good time. After all, it is his special day.

It’s a great time for the Ferreiras and the Fleurys to celebrate, to look forward to what is to come and to review what has been. Also, this gives 19pondstreet the opportunity to introduce a new generation, a 6th generation of Americans. Jacob, his brother Zachary, and their four cousins can trace themselves back to May 28, 1862, when Pat Reilly and Rosa Kearnan walked down The Neptune’s gangplank and stepped out into New York City.

Here is the generational line:

1st gen – Patrick Leo Riley (1875-1955) – Patrick and Rosa’s son

2nd gen – Patrick Joseph Riley (1900-1985)

3rd gen – Barbara Hope Riley Fleury (1927-2015)

4th gen – Richard B. Fleury, Jr

5th gen – Staci Fleury Ferreira

6th gen – Jacob Richard Ferreira

Bet Patrick and Rosa would probably say those fourteen days spent in Neptune’s steerage was well worth it.

Happy Birthday Jacob. May all your future ride be great!

A Birthday Today!

Sean Fleury,* born in Warwick and raised in Massachusetts, has himself a Birthday today.  His parents, Karen Ann Matteson and Timothy Patrick Fleury, and his paternal grandparents, the late Richard B. Fleury (1928-1992) and the late Barbara Hope Riley (1927-2015), gifted Sean with some intelligence and athletic ability.

After achieving some “moderate success” with his high school academics and soccer, Sean enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and played some soccer. By the time he graduated with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Sean had experienced a four-year varsity career with the RPI soccer team, had a captaincy under his belt, plus he was an ESPN Magazine Academic All-American selection.

Presently, Sean and his bride Mollie Knake** are in Costa Rica on a work assignment and trying to adjust to the “harsh” conditions.

A Birthday Today!

Nancy Fleury Orlando has a Birthday Today.*

Nancy is enjoying her Birthday in the lovely town of Bristol, Rhode Island, where it is going to be about 63 degrees and partly sunny. It doesn’t happen every birthday for Nancy, but this year America is giving her a three day weekend. Plenty of time for her husband Tony, son Nick and daughter Catherine to pull together something special for Nancy’s day.

Happy Birthday to one of Raytheon’s Happy Road Warriors.

Born on this date – April 5th

Erin Fleury was born on this day in the City of Warwick to Karen (Matteson) Fleury and Timothy Patrick Fleury. Erin’s grandparents were the late Barbara (Riley) Fleury (1927-2015) and the late Richard B. Fleury, Sr. (1928-1992).

Although born in Warwick, Erin grew up in Central Massachusetts, where she attended the local schools and graduated from Wachusett Regional High School. Erin had a great academic and athletic career. Soccer was the sport in which she excelled. Not only did Erin make varsity each of her four years, but she became a standout on several of the Massachusetts AAU club teams. After high school, Erin chose University of Mass – Lowell to pursue her academic and soccer interests. Injuries prevented Erin from having a full four year playing career. However, in a testament to her own determination and in dedication to her teammates, Erin became an integral member of the coaching staff. Others may have walked away from the situation, but Erin embraced the circumstance and turned it into a positive.

Speaking of positives, on September 5, 2016, Erin married a great guy, Michael Garceau in a wonderful setting at the Tewksbury, MA Country Club. Now, almost four years later, Erin and Mike are eagerly awaiting a new addition to the lives, later this summer.

A Wedding in Minneapolis!

Sean Fleury, son of Karen Matteson Fleury and Timothy Fleury, and grandson of Barbara Riley Fleury (1929-2015) and Richard B. Fleury (1928-1992), married Mollie Knake (of the Knakes of Iowa) on August 31, 2019 in the City of Minneapolis.

Sean and Mollie are both employed in the high-tech/biomedical industries in the Twin Cities area, which has afforded them the opportunity to engage in some world travel. In fact, over the next week or so, they will leave for a two year work-related stint in Costa Rica. All best to them on this adventure.
