Born on this date – 30th

Kevin Frances Xavier Mulligan was born on this date to the late Margaret Ernestine Riley (1910-1989) and the late Walter Frances Xavier Mulligan (1906-1957). His maternal grandparents were Marguetta Etta Greenhalgh (1876-1962) and Patrick Leo Riley (1875-1955). Kevin’s paternal grandparents were Sarah Ellen Kelly (1868-1937) and Nicholas Mulligan (1869-1954).

A product of Pawtucket, Kevin grew up and played in the shadows of Memorial Hospital. He attended Pawtucket schools and graduated from Tolman High School, where he played sports and amassed more friends and acquaintances than “you could shake a stick at”, which he probably did on several occasions.

Post high school, Kevin graduated from the University of Rhode Island and became one of Pawtucket’s finest, serving in its Fire Department. Kevin also taught in the city’s school department and coached track and field for several high school teams in the Blackstone Valley. Recently, Kevin has been officiating field events at college track meets in New England.

Back in April 1982, Kevin married another Pawtucketite, Gail Benoit at Saint Joseph’s Church on Walcott Street, Pawtucket. The couple was blessed with the birth of twin girls: Elizabeth and Caitlin (see the Dec 8th blog entry).

Kevin is the youngest of the Mulligan siblings. His sisters are: Judy (1938-1962), Martha and Paula. Their father Walter died at the age of 51 and their mother Margaret passed back in 1989.

Today Kevin is enjoying the retirement life and is having various body parts repaired or replaced, while devoting as much time as he can to doting after his two grandchildren.

Happy Birthday Kevin.

Margaret Ernestine Riley (1910) was born on this date in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to the late Marguetta E. Greenhalgh (07/27/1876) and the late Patrick Leo Riley (06/07/1875). She was one of eight Riley children and the fifth born female. A smile was ever present on her lovely face. With a hug and a laugh, Margaret greeted all her nieces and nephews. She was a joy to be around.

Margaret married Walter Frances Xavier Mulligan on September 6, 1937 at her long-time parish, St Joseph’s Church on Walcott Street, Pawtucket. A picture from their wedding reception adorns the header of this 19pondstreet website.

The Pawtucket Mulligans had three daughters: Judith, Martha, Paula and one son, Kevin. Unfortunately, Walter passed away on February 4, 1957 at the age of 51. Margaret passed at the age of 78 on September 2, 1989.

Francis Charles Riley was born on this date in 1915 in the city of Pawtucket to the late Marguetta Etta Greenhalgh (1876-1962) and the late Patrick Leo Riley (1875-1955).

The youngest of the eight Riley siblings, Francis (Frank) grew up in Pawtucket attending St. Joseph’s School on Walcott Street. He graduated from St. Raphael Academy in 1933. In his youthful days, Frank was quite a second baseman. His oldest brother Patrick J. said teammates referred to Frank as “Honey”, because he had the sweetest moves around the bag at second base.

On October 18, 1941, Frank married Rita Patricia Coleman in Pawtucket’s Sacred Heart Church. Just four months after their wedding on February 2, 1942, Francis entered the US Army serving in Europe during World War II. He was honorably discharged on December 3, 1945.

It was on February 15, 1954 that Francis and Rita’s son Stephen was born.

Francis was well known throughout all of the city and town halls in Rhode Island, because of his profession as a title examiner for real estate insurance companies. Frank came in contact with most of the Rhode Island’s top lawyers and city and town officials. Many of those officials sought out Frank’s advice on complicated title questions. Frank continued to work well beyond the traditional retirement date, enjoying his daily contacts and solving some of the State’s tricky real estate problems.

Francis and Rita were married for almost 33 years before Rita passed way on January 6, 1974. Francis passed on March 2, 2004 at the age of 88.
